Don’t look up, which landed on Netflix at the Christmas night, it should be a comedy.

From the mind of the Director of the Great Director Adam McKay, he told the story of two astronomers, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), who found the comet of the murder of the planet to the earth. The couple departed to convince the world of existential threats faced, but had a fairly difficult time to sell science to people who were more interested in memes than meteorites.

A star-studded actor – so busy, in fact, that people like Meryl Streep and Blanchett paint are cursed on the second bill on the film posters – keep the jokes rolling for more than two hours, although viewers may be difficult to ignore it. A disturbing reality that boils below the surface.

Don’t look around is comedy, but also the charges that burden the political, economic and sociocultural climate where the world finds himself in 2021. In this way: When credit roll, you might want to do it detoxify from anything with news feed.

Of course, McKay fans who exist will know that uncomfortable satire is Forte Director – Short, representative, and succession (where he is an executive manufacturer) all take a microscope with messy politics from American capitalism – but not visible up, he dealing with a completely different currency.

To navigate the world of space and science, McKay asked for help from Amy Mainzer, a planetary science professor at the University of Arizona and led the scientist at the NASA nasa hunting Neowise hunting mission.

In front of Don’T Look Up Digital released on December 24, we sat with Mainzer to talk comets, comedy, and his role in creating a bitter aftertaste of the film.

Too a little late

“I think a lot [Don’t look up] talking to the reaction that most people have when scientists have bad news to say,” Mainzer tells us over zoom. “This film is a parody, obviously, but takes a very insinuated view on our reluctance to listen to the bad news, even when we really need.”

Meryl Streep plays President Orlean in the latest McKay features, thin caricatures of politicians today, who often support fans rather than facts. After hearing Dr. Mindy Dicaprio’s warning, he only suggested that the government “sit tightly and assess” – who forced Dibiasky Lawrence into a more drastic action.

“[Reaction] It happens on all types of different topics,” Mainzer said, “not just asteroids and comets, but pandemics, climate, severe weather, and so on.

“Science tells us that if we take the following steps, we can significantly blunt any effect that happens. If we get it and proactively respond to [bad news] using a science-based approach, we can actually avoid some of the worst results.”

Mainzer will not recognize as an inspiration for real life for Lawrence’s passionate astronomers, but there are more than just the former instructions in the last. “You know, I think Kate and I have a lot in common,” he said. “He is intended to represent one of two scientific activism strategies in films – [the desire] out and protest when you do not see the government or politicians take action based on findings.
